THE MEOLE BRACE SCHOOL CLASS OF 2011 ARE IN A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN!

Meole Brace School Science College has achieved its best ever GCSE examination results with a fantastic 73% of
Year 11 students gaining at least 5 GCSE passes at grades A*-C including English and Maths.

Amazingly, 20 students achieved the remarkable feat of passing all their examinations with grades of A* or A, again a record result for the school.

Congratulations to you, our brilliant Year 11's, from the staff, Years 7-10 and all our friends and supporters in the Meole Brace community.  We wish all of you the very best in your future lives and careers and don't forget:  you will always be a part of Meole Brace School.

GOOD LUCK!

Careers Education, Guidance and Work Experience

Careers Education is seen as central to the preparation of pupils to take on and enjoy the experiences, opportunities and responsibilities of adult life.

Careers Education is provided by the following means:

  • A number of topics relating to Careers Education are taught within our timetable to all years, covering the framework suggested either by the Department for Education and Science or the guidelines from Connexions.
  • Visits to places of employment, and speakers from a wide variety of occupations/further education establishments, e.g. Industrial visits for all pupils in Year 9, Careers Convention and Business Forum in Year 10.
  • Open access to our extensively stocked careers library.
  • Use of our Careers database computer programs in the ICT rooms and school libraries e.g. Fast Tomato.
  • Weekly visits from two of the Shropshire Connexions Advisory staff who are available to answer any questions.  They also hold weekly drop-in surgeries for interviews.  These are primarily for pupils in Year 11, but pupils from other years are encouraged to use the facility.  The careers advisers are introduced to pupils in Year 9 and again in Year 10, before their personal interviews in Year 11.
  • We emphasise the role of parents within the decision making processes and parents are invited to attend Information Evenings.  Connexions Advisers and representatives from the local colleges of Further Education are available at Years 9 to 11 parents' evenings.  In Years 9 and 11 parents are invited to attend an Option Choice Open Evening, where opportunities are explained.
  • Pupils with additional educational needs are provided for through our Learning Support department and the Shropshire Connexions Service.
  • Work Experience is a compulsory element in Year 10. At present it lasts for two weeks in June.  Assistance and guidance regarding the aims and objectives are given by tutors, the teachers responsible for work-experience and parents.  The responsibility for arranging suitable placements is placed in the hands of the pupils and their contacts.  Tutors visit each pupil on their placements, except if they are working in another town or country.  Reports are requested from employers and certificates are awarded to pupils who perform to the required standards.  There is an expectation from each pupil to complete a Work Experience diary and follow-up forms part of their studies.  Assistance is also given for those seeking further Work Experience which is completed during holidays. Extended Work Experience is part of the schools delivery of Work Related Learning.  Pupils are identified for this project and in conjuction with the Year Tem Leader and Connexions placements are agreed.

In addition to form tutors, a member of staff is available to offer further advice:
Mr D Tunnah regarding applications to Further Education and for advice on any aspect of Careers Education/Counselling and for Work Experience placements
