Meole Brace School Science College
Meole Brace Science College aims to inspire pupils to enjoy science and to pursue it further. We strive to provide the highest standard of science education through interactive challenging activities with an emphasis on practical discovery and encouraging students to become self motivated and independent learners. All pupils experience the thrill of discovery and are challenged to question the world around them. Facilities: The department has nine large and well equipped science laboratories and a new computer suite. All the laboratories are fitted with interactive whiteboards and data logging equipment, recently four laboratories have been fully refurbished. The department coordinates and controls extensive environmental areas around the school as part of the eco schools initiative. Staff: Currently the department consists of nine highly qualified staff: Mr G. Puplett - Subject Team Leader - Physics Specialist Mrs R. Hewitt - 2nd in Department - Chemistry Specialist Mrs Davies - Chemistry Specialist Mrs Jones - Biology Specialist Miss Jordan - Biology Specialist Mr Middleton - Biology Specialist Mr Pickard - Physics Specialist Dr Smith - Year Team Leader - Chemistry Specialist Mr Tunnah - Biology Specialist and a team of five experienced Technicians KS4 Opportunities: A large and extensive range of GCSE courses is offered to suit pupils of all abilities and skills. The courses range from the scientific rigor of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy for academic pupils through to the vocationally based BTEC course.
The KS3 course provides students with challenging and stimulating opportunities to enhance and develop their scientific knowledge and understanding in the three scientific disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. This is via practical scientific investigation and theoretical dependent and independent learning including use of the extensive departmental ICT facilities. Students are encouraged at all stages to take a questioning approach to science and to take full advantage of the teacher's specialist subject knowledge. The KS3 course is very much a target based course and students are encouraged to set aims, assess and monitor their own progress against set standards. |
