Departmental aims
Within the Modern Languages Department we are committed to securing a quality of education that meets the needs of every student at school.
- To offer all pupils an experience of school life which is purposeful and enjoyable

- To foster qualities of self-esteem, confidence and satisfaction through effort and achievement.
- To encourage sensitivity and awareness to the needs of others both within the school community and beyond.
We seek to meet our aims by:
- Working to create an atmosphere of care and support setting high and consistent expectations of all students promoting the highest standards of teaching and learning maintaining well developed procedures for monitoring and reporting upon students' progress
- Offering students opportunities to exercise responsibility and broadening students experience through our range of extra-curricular activities.
Departmental TEACHING aims
The fundamental aim of foreign language teaching is to enable learners to understand and use the foreign language for communication.
1. Linguistic and literacy aims
- To provide successful and enjoyable learning experiences which may encourage learners to continue their study of a foreign language or to embark on the study of a new one
- To give learners the confidence and competence to use the language
- To develop efficient listening, reading, writing and speaking skills.
- To foster sensitivity to the language, its forms, sounds and rhythms
- To develop and reinforce the skills of analysis, classification, synthesis and analogy.
2. Human and social aims
- To increase social competence by promoting an awareness of and sensitivity to differences between social customs and behaviour
- To foster positive attitudes towards other countries and those who live in them.
- To enable learners to meet foreigners in this country and to travel abroad with confidence, enjoyment and interest.
- To awaken an interest in foreign cultures and life-styles and to foster a willingness to see other culture in a broader context.
- To develop a capacity for understanding and accepting the unfamiliar.
- To encourage tolerance and a willingness to work together.
Equipment
It is expected that each pupil will attend his/her language lesson with:
- French /German / Spanish book
- French / German / Spanish booklet
- 2 pens (different colours)
- pencil
- ruler
Home Study
- In addition to regular homework set by class teachers, pupils will be given assessment on a regular basis.
- From these assessments pupils will be given their current working level or grade but, more importantly, they will be able to diagnose their individual strengths and weaknesses.
