The
school became a specialist science and mathematics college in September
2003. At the heart of the school's bid for specialist status was the
emphasis on continuous improvement of teaching and learning. Teaching
and learning remain at the heart of our school improvement plan.
The
curriculum offers French as a foreign language in year 7 and the
opportunity for those who would benefit from starting the second
foreign language, German in year 8. In the upper school all students
follow a common core of subjects - Citizenship, English, ICT,
Mathematics, PE, RE and Science. Additionally all students follow
courses which provide careers and sex education either across the
curriculum or within the tutor programme. For upper school students
this allows 5 additional choices from a wide range of courses.
The
additional educational needs department meets particular needs for
students either through withdrawing students or working with them
across the curriculum.
Extra-curricular activities are a
particular strength of the school with many opportunities provided
through drama, music and sport. School trips are organised on a regular
basis in support of the school's curriculum.
A high percentage
of students remain in full time education beyond the age of 16. The
school is part of the Shrewsbury Federation which includes all the
County Council's 11-16s schools in Shrewsbury and Pontesbury as well as
Severndale special school, Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology
and Shrewsbury Sixth Form College. The links with post-16 providers
provides appropriate pathways for students through the 14-19 phase.
